Making sure the treatment
has worked
- After your treatment, you will have regular doctor visits and
tests from time to time because prostate cancer can come back,
even after treatment.
- During the office visit, you will probably have:
- a Digital Rectal Exam (DRE) even if the prostate was removed
during surgery
- a PSA test
- Your doctor will continue to check your PSA after treatment.
If your PSA is going up, this can be an early warning that the
cancer is back.
- If all tests remain normal, the cancer is said to be in remission.
That means the cancer cannot be found. But you still should
have regular doctor visits and tests from time to time.

“The doctor told me I would need to come in
for check ups on a regular basis for the next
10 years. That was hard to hear. I didn’t
want to think about the cancer coming back.
— But, I’ve learned to take one day at a time
and be thankful for each one. If the cancer
comes back, I’ll deal with it then.”
